Use the actual material
Reserve a piece from the same material and finish as the project. Record the machine, tool, selected setting and date. A sample from a different sheet may not resolve the question you are trying to answer.
Test the difficult detail
Include a representative small letter, corner or cut shape rather than only a large easy square. The result should show whether the planned design can be separated and handled as intended. Follow the machine maker’s guidance for adjusting the setting.
Cricut: choosing material settings ↗ — A small test cut and the exact machine/material setting are part of the manufacturer process.
Inspect the whole process
For a transferred design, cutting is only one stage. Check weeding, transfer and the surface or blank using the material’s instructions. Keep the sample result before repeating the same process across several gifts.
Keep the setting with the result
A note such as vinyl setting is incomplete if the machine, material or tool can change. Record enough detail to reproduce the trial. Our sheet planner reserves spare pieces, but it cannot tell you which cut pressure or heat setting is correct.
Record material brand and variant, machine and tool, settings, sample photographs and the finished result. Decorative makes belong here; repairs and installed fixtures belong to Home by Doing.
